Nikolaos Gyzis was born in Tinos on March 1, 1842. He was one of the most important Greek painters of the 19th century of the so-called "Munich School". In its later phase, his art is more poetic and idealistic, often inspired by Greek mythology and religious themes, with the obvious influence of symbolism.
