Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece, with a height that starts at 600 meters on the slopes near Litochoro in Pieria Prefecture and reaches 2,917 meters (at the peak Pantheon or Mytikas). According to mythology, Olympus was home to the gods of the ancient Greeks, with Zeus as the supreme god, who was therefore called Olympius. From Olympus, Zeus directed the terrible Titanomachy, where the twelve gods defeated the Titans, symbols of the forces of nature. In its mountainous massifs, plateaus and gorges with a total area of 40,000 acres, it hosts over 1,700 very rare endemic plant species, in an environment of particular beauty and mountaineering interest. In 1981, UNESCO declared it a "Conserved Ecosystem of the Global Biosphere".
